Gertrude and Ecliff reside on my sister Sue's farm . They had their second year of hatching babies in 2002....

![]() Emu eggs in comparison to hen eggs... also Emu foot... which looks pretty prehistoric. Sue said that Ecliff did not enjoy this example and wanted that hen egg out of there now! |
Gertrude lays the eggs but doesn't participate any further. It seems Emu hens are only interested in the courting portion of the relationship not in raising children. They lay the eggs but refuse to sit on them and will kill the new hatchlings for the opportunity to make court again. | ![]() The male, however, is totally dedicated to the eggs, is very protective of them and when there are about 5 eggs he begins to sit. Ecliff (the male) starting to sit. |

During the incubation period, which is about 60 days, he goes into somewhat of a trance not even leaving the eggs to eat. Ecliff, proud father that he is, hatched seven babies this year. |

| The emu egg has a textured pattern that is somewhat like a finger print in that no two hens lay the same pattern. | ![]() |
Emu eggs are carved in a scrimshaw fashion. The outer layer looks somewhat like a hard avocado, the next layer is light green and the next is white. |

| This is Henry the chicken that doesn't want to be a chicken. He rubs against people until they pick him up. Here is Henry visiting Sidney and her class. He had a ball. He let everyone pet him and then would crow and the kids would squeal and he would crow again. He is a Cochin breed. He was one of four that Sue got for Sidney's Easter but Henry is the only one that refuses to be a chicken | ![]() |
